We had an amazing time at Wakestone Rock Quarry Tuesday. The kids came back with excellent examples of granite. The Geologist told us the quarry is actually part of one big rock that is 50 miles long, 15 miles deep, and 25 miles wide. The kids observed many pieces of granite and were able to point out mica, quartz, and feldspar. They have been mining on this site since 1970. When we were on our way out the bus drove onto a scale and the bus weighed 25 thousand pounds. There was a lot of rock on the bus!!!! Here are some pictures of what we saw. I also attached some Utubes of Quarry Blasts under Earth Materials sites.
Today we learned about being Music Smart(Musical Intelligence). We read stories and used instruments as sound effects, copied beats, and moved to some Super Hero theme music. Our favorite part of the day was making our own rhythm sticks out of PVC pipe and electrical tape. We will use these throughout the year to play games that help us follow directions. On Body Smart (Bodily-Kinesthetic)Day, students were able to explore exercise through an obstacle course. We also practiced self-control with our bodies while walking in line and moving around the classroom. The classes favorite part of the day was doing Cosmic Kids Yoga. I am attaching a tab under the websites page. Yesterday, we learned about Word Smart (Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence). We worked on our reading stamina and remembering how to do Read To Self from Kindergarten. Students also made a collage of pictures to help us when we don't know what to write about. A technology link made was a Wordle of things we want to do in first grade. The students really loved this website and it would be a great site to go to together. Here is the link: http://www.wordle.net Today we learned about being Self Smart (Intrapersonal Smart). People who are strong in this intelligence are very in touch with their feelings, likes/dislikes, and often like to have time alone. Another characteristic of Self Smart is having many hobbies. We also discussed that many people can go between being People Smart and Self Smart depending on the situation. Student's loved the book, I Like Myself, about a little girl who loves herself for all that she is without worry of others impressions. Each child received a plastic gem to remind themselves of how special they are.The favorite part of the day was when each student made a Super Hero Mask to reflect their own personality. They also created names for their Super Hero self. We took a walk around the building with our masks on. Today we focused on learning our first Multiple Intelligence. We explored how to be People Smart (Interpersonal Intelligence) by getting to know our classmates. People who have a strong Interpersonal Intelligence make friends easily, enjoy socializing, We discussed the characteristics of being People Smart, and how it can be easy for some people and difficult for others. Here are a few activities we experienced today. Each table worked as a team to create a super hero setting. Then, team members came up with a table name to describe their super hero city. Some of the table names were: Dangerous Night, Star World, Super Hero Land, Raleigh City, Power City, and Twilight City. Students worked well together and shared all the materials. Students walked around the room and met new friends. They had to find at least 2 people for each section on our People Smart Scavenger Hunt. Some of the descriptions they were looking for were: someone who has 6 letters in their name, can count to 30, likes chocolate ice cream, etc. This gave students an opportunity to talk with some friends they don't know much about. I can't wait to greet all my new students and parents in the morning. I have been working all weekend preparing for your return. We are going to have a BLAST this week. Stay tuned for pictures of some of the fun activities we are experiencing!!!
"UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." The Oncler in The Lorax Our class participated in a seminar on The Lorax today. The students were very engaged and passionate about the message of the book. I am attaching a utube of someone reading The Lorax. Here are a few of the questions we discussed:
Why does Dr. Seuss never show the face of the Oncler? Why do you think the Oncler never stopped producing and causing pollution? When do we know we have had enough? What advice would you give the Oncler? Have a mini family seminar at home!! Let me know how it goes. The kids seemed very interested in sharing the seminar experience with their family!! Mrs.Renigar showed us an example to plant a seed. We wrote how to plant a seed during writing. We planted our seeds with our teams in science. We watched if the seed grew.
