Our class began discussing opinion writing last week. We are learning about an author's purpose for writing. To persuade, is what we are focusing on this week. Students have really been into writing persuasive letters to their parents. I must warn you, they may try to persuade you to buy or do something for them. I am attaching one of their letters to your Holiday present:) Students have been promised a rock for their table if they can get a written response back from their parents to share. They understand that persuasive letters don't always work, but you really have to have support and examples to share your opinion. This is a great way to get your kids to write at home. If they want a new privilege, etc. have them write a persuasive letter to you. Two great books that are funny examples on this are:I Wanna New Room, and I Wanna Iguana by Karen Kaufman Orloff. Persuasive/opinion writing is new to our curriculum this year. It will continue throughout their elementary experience.
