We had a fabulous first day! The kids were so well behaved and friendly. We practiced being People Smart with our new classroom family. Sorry no pictures because we were so busy, I didn't even think about it. Make sure to sign up for the Class Dojo student and parent accounts. You will receive an email report each Friday. I'm exhausted. I will be in bed very soon.
After trying lots of different ways, I found YouTube to be the best way to share the videos. The videos can only be seen by those who have the link. They were very large files and were difficult to format. I will be adding a few at the time, so keep checking. It is taking 30 minutes to download first video. I will not let technology beat me!!! The videos are adorable and you can really hear how much they practiced and worked together to make it happen!!! So proud of the kids.
We had a E.G's dad show us a video of how his 3d Printer works!!! He later made each kid a small object made from his 3D Printer. The boys got a robot and the girls got a heart ring. The kids were amazed. So cool!!!!!
Our school will be going through some server updates next week. I will not have my laptop all week. If you need me during the day, please text me or know that I will not get to check emails as frequently! No technology at all being used on Thursday. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
I'm sure you have heard about our Class Dojo. I sent home the parent and student codes to most students on Friday. A few kids wanted me to wait and put it in Monday folders. Please make sure that you log-in as a parent so you can get an email on Friday. Kids can make their own avatar and write reflections about their behavior! Please leave comments of the aspects of this that you like and don't like. As with any behavior system, there are aspects I like and aspects I'm not sure about. However, the past few days it has cut down on verbal reminders, faster transitions, and more self control with talking. I am trying this out to see if I want to use it next year. Here is an introductory video on Class Dojo. You can also get the App free!
We had an amazing performance from Billy Jonas at our school today. He is a musician from Asheville who uses many instruments from recycled materials. The children loved him and his songs. I attached a few of his You Tubes to Learning Videos under the Fun Button. We are so lucky to have such an amazing PTA to fund these educational cultural arts performances. Here is a link to Billy Jonas' website. He is playing at Cary Arts Center , March 16!!! Students have been practicing How To informational writing the past few weeks. We are focusing on writing the steps or process in sequential order. We are learning the importance of details and writing clear and complete sentences. The class has really been enjoying this type of writing. They have enjoyed it so much, as well as, reading some How To's from Highlights magazine. Many students have been taking them home to read and actually complete the project or make the recipe. Here are a few projects they shared.
Here is the format for How To Writing if you want to practice at home. Title Materials or Ingredients . . . Method (steps) 1. 2. Conclusion (tip or extra information) Groups of students have been researching a topic of interest during Daily 5. Each group is documenting main idea and important details in text read. Each group enjoyed continuing their research by using IPADs. This is a great way to practice reading and understanding nonfiction text, writing complete sentences, and looking for important information on the internet. Students know where a few sites are off the Brooks website. This is a fun way to practice these skills at home. I'm sure you could also look for books at the public library. |
